Pilates vs. Lagree: We Tried Both So You Don't Have To
We put both workouts to the test to break down the differences and help you figure out which one is worth your time (and your sweat!).
FITNESS
If you’ve ever been caught in the rabbit hole of fitness trends on Instagram or TikTok, you’ve probably come across both Pilates and Lagree. They look similar—lots of slow, controlled movements, core engagement, and those sleek machines—but are they really the same? Spoiler alert: Nope.
We put both workouts to the test to break down the differences and help you figure out which one is worth your time (and your sweat!).
What’s the Difference?
Pilates: The OG Core Sculptor
Pilates has been around for ages—since the early 20th century, to be exact—created by Joseph Pilates to improve strength, flexibility, and posture. It can be done on a mat or using a Reformer machine, which adds resistance with springs and pulleys. Expect slow, controlled movements that emphasize core strength, alignment, and flexibility. It’s all about that mind-body connection and is great for anyone looking to lengthen and tone without the impact.
Lagree: Pilates’ More Intense Cousin
Lagree is often mistaken for Pilates, but trust us—it’s a whole different beast. Created by Sebastien Lagree, this workout uses a Megaformer machine, which looks like a Reformer on steroids. Lagree combines slow, high-intensity, low-impact movements with continuous tension, meaning your muscles don’t get a break. It’s Pilates’ sweatier, shakier, more intense cousin, designed to burn out every muscle group and leave you sore in places you didn’t know existed.
The Experience: What to Expect
If You Try Pilates…
You’ll focus on form, breathing, and precise movements.
Expect a slower pace with an emphasis on control and core engagement.
The Reformer machine adds resistance, but the burn is subtle (until you feel it the next day!).
It’s great for improving posture, flexibility, and overall strength without high impact.
If You Try Lagree…
You’ll be shaking in the first five minutes (seriously!).
Every move is slow and controlled but packs an intense muscle burn.
There’s no rest—just continuous, time-under-tension exercises.
It’s a full-body workout with a major focus on core, legs, and endurance.
Expect to be sore (in a good way) for days afterward.
So, Which One Should You Try?
It depends on what you’re looking for! If you want a more traditional, controlled approach to strengthening and lengthening, Pilates is your go-to. It’s great for injury recovery, improving flexibility, and sculpting lean muscles. If you want an intense, sweat-drenched, muscle-quivering workout that pushes your endurance and strength to the limit, Lagree is your match.
Either way, both workouts are amazing for building a strong, toned body without high-impact movements. So, whether you go for Pilates’ graceful control or Lagree’s hardcore burn, you’ll walk away feeling stronger (and maybe a little wobbly).
Have you tried either of these workouts?
